Hello there!
I have a huge issue with the PowerBI Dataset refreshing. I have a .pbix which I created in the desktop version, the dataset sources are from a public https url with an anonymous connection, no authentication needed. It works perfectly in the desktop version.
The problem is that when I publish it online and try to refresh it in the data hub it just simply fails. I tried to edit the credentials for each data source by setting the authentication method to anonymous and the privacy level to none, public, organizational... doesn't matter.
Why is such a simple task is hard to achieve here? It works in the desktop version - it should work in the cloud too. No authentication is needed for my data sources.
Thanks in advance
Hi. It depends on what you are doing on your code. If PBI Desktop can refresh doesn't mean Service will. Sometimes the tool shows a warning that your dataset won't be able to refresh.
Tell us more about what you are doing. Is it a single table request to a web site? are you request the web for each row or something like that? are you scrapping a web site? is it an API?
Another thing that can help us is the error. You say that fails. Ok, what does the fail says? it should have a message.
All that will help us help you 🙂

Hello there!
Thank you for your answer, I will try to show you the details of the problem.
Inside PowerBI Desktop each one of my table represents a CSV file source from a public link. No need for authorization, you can check any of them if you want.
Example:
https://spicepms.com/pt/uploads/powerbi_reports/logHangers.csvPowerBI Desktop Dataset
As it is visible it does not need any credentials.
When I try to refresh the dataset on the published version on my workspace it shows this:
If I check the dataset credentials and try to test the connection, this is what it gets:
It is completely funny, because this is a public url. If the Desktop can reach it, why the online service cannot?
Thanks in advance,
Mark
When was the last time you refresh your PowerBi Desktop? because when I try to open "https://spicepms.com/pt/uploads/powerbi_reports/logHangers.csv" it won't open. It says the site can't be reached. The anonymous credentials should let anyone open the URL even if there is a header authentication it would return an http response but it only show status conection error. That means there is an issue with the source. That's why I'm asking for you to refresh desktop.
Consider that if you have a VPN or it works in a local network, you must use a gateway even if it's a web connection because it only works on a local environment.
I hope that helps
