Data Changes After Publishing Power BI Report to Web Service

I'm experiencing an issue where my Power BI Desktop report (on an on-premise server) displays figures correctly, but after publishing to the Power BI web service and refreshing the dataset, the numbers change.

The dataset is linked to an Excel file, and the values are in decimal format (e.g., 1.0345). I suspect this might be due to a difference in regional settings between the on-premise server and the Power BI web service.

Has anyone encountered this issue before? Could the regional settings be affecting how decimal values are interpreted after publishing and refreshing?

I've attached screenshots for reference. Any insights or troubleshooting steps would be greatly appreciated!

Can you build the report (new) in the Power BI Service and try to use the Edit Data Model (preview) in the service to open PowerQuery and look at the data?

Hi @simonantony ,

Thanks for reaching out to the Microsoft fabric community forum.

I would also take a moment to personally thank @Anonymous , for actively participating in the community forum and for the solutions you’ve been sharing in the community forum. Your contributions make a real difference.

The Power BI web service probably uses different regional settings compared to your on-premise server, leading to misinterpretations of decimal values from your Excel data source. This issue often occurs when transitioning Power BI solutions between different environments.

The regional settings are likely the cause. Here is the detailed explanation:

  • Power BI's regional settings affect how decimals are interpreted, with different regions using different separators (e.g., "." in the US, "," in Europe). Mismatched settings can misinterpret values in Excel files.
  • Excel files adapt to the machine's regional settings, affecting how Power BI interprets the data depending on the refresh location.
  • The issue arises after refreshing the dataset in Power BI, indicating a regional setting conflict during the cloud refresh process.

Here are a few steps you can take to troubleshoot and potentially resolve this issue:

  • Ensure the regional settings in both Power BI Desktop and the Power BI web service are aligned. In Power BI Desktop, navigate to File > Options and settings > Options > Regional Settings. For the Power BI web service, go to Settings > General > Language and Region.
  • Check that the data type and format of the decimal values in your Excel file are correctly configured. The issue might arise from the data type being interpreted differently after publishing. Make sure the locale settings in your Excel file match the regional settings in Power BI. Set the locale in Excel under File > Options > Language.
  • If using an on-premises data gateway, the regional settings of the gateway server may also impact the data. Ensure the gateway server's regional settings are as expected.

The first and second line appear correct, so I do not think it is a regional issue. I suspect the refresh in Power BI Service is pointing to a different excel file.

I have removed the connections to the old Excel files multiple times through Manage Connections and Gateways. After that, I have repeatedly published and replaced both the report and the semantic model, and I have also recreated the file connection to Excel from scratch multiple times. However, the data still changes after refreshing.

Is there something I might be overlooking or not updating correctly?
