Credentials provided for the Web source are invalid (OneDrive data source, not on-premises)

There are multiple messages on this subject in the community, but none of the suggested solutions worked for me. So I decided to post my own specific situation. I would REALLY appreciate it if anyone could suggest a solution or workaround for my case.

A report was generated on Power BI Desktop using two excel files stored in One Drive as a Web data source. In the analysis, the merge function was done between the two excel files. It was published on the Power BI Service workspace. Any updates made in the source data in One Drive are reflected on Power BI Desktop. However, on Power BI Service, I keep facing the problem of refreshing data.

Below is the error message that I get.

***

Data source error The scheduled update is invalid because you do not have the credentials for at least one data source. To start the update again, go to the settings page for this dataset and enter the credentials for all data sources. Then reactivate the scheduled update.

As prompted, I tried to edit/enter the credential information as below. For the credential method, there were Anonymous, Basic and OAuth2. I tried all the option, with the credential level as Organizational (this was what was assigned as the credential level in Power BI Desktop).

Then I receive the following messages.

****

The credentials provided for the Web source are invalid. (Source at https://********************.xlsx.)

Any credential method that I use, I get similar messaging -- basically there is a credential issue.

Below are other things that I tried based on the suggestions in the Power BI community but did not work for me.

  • Thinking that the data merge between the two files was the cause, I tried creating and publishing a report using only one data source. But the same problem persisted.
  • Credentials provided for the Web source are invalid - PowerBI - SharePoint Views -
  • Both the files are on One Drive, and I do not use gateway for on-premises data source
  • https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/power-bi/connect-data/service-admin-troubleshooting-power-bi-person...

Error: The credentials provided for the dataset are invalid. Please update the credentials through a refresh or in the Data Source Settings dialog to continue.

Solution: If you get a credentials message, it could mean:

    - The usernames and passwords that you used to sign in to data sources aren't up to date. In Power BI, go to refresh settings for the dataset. In Manage Data Sources, select Edit credentials to update the credentials for the data source.

    - Mashups between a cloud source and an on-premises source, in a single query, fail to refresh in the gateway (personal mode) if one of the sources is using OAuth for authentication. An example of this issue is a mashup between CRM Online and a local SQL Server instance. The mashup fails because CRM Online requires OAuth.

This error is a known issue, and it's being looked at. To work around the problem, have a separate query for the cloud source and the on-premises source. Then, use a merge or append query to combine them.

Neither of the above two seems to apply in my case, but I am a little concerned about the last line. I am thinking that the workaround in the last line doesn't apply to me, but I am concerend about the fact that this may not have any solution...

Appreciate any support on this!

I have been exploring solutions for a while. and today I managed to resolve it. Hope this helps the issues at your end.

I followed these steps:

1- Go to the Dataset in PopwerBI webservice

2- from dataset settings page, go to "Garteway and cloud connections"

>> 2-1 in this section, you will be able to see a sub-section "Cloud Connections" which ahs a dialogue box showing where your cloud based dataset is stored.

FahimehMcG_0-1693352116161.png

>> 2-2 click on the button "Personal Cloud Connect", and select "Create Connection". Then a new setting panel will appear to the right side of your screen.

3- to set up connection in this panel;

>> 3-1 first define a name for the connection

>> 3-2 select OAuth 2.0 for Authentication Method

>>>>3-2-1 click on Edit Credentials, then you will be asked to login to your account

>> 3-3 under the General, select "Organisational" for the Privacy level

>> 3-4 tick the last box to allow the connection to be used with on-promises data gateways

>> 3-5 click on "Create" button (Note: if you have not populated data correctly in this panel, then the "Create" button looks diabled (grey colour))

FahimehMcG_1-1693352593624.png

4- Now you need to apply the connection which you have created. To do this, go back to Gateway Connections and within the Cloud connections select the connection you have created (for example in this case, I name the connection "Test1". Then I had to find the Test1 from the menu to select it)

FahimehMcG_2-1693352790279.png

>> 4-1 then select "Apply"

This way the Failed message which is sitting under the Data source Credentials section should this appear.

Credentials section before applying the new connection:

Credentials section after the new connection is applied:

Now go and process with Refresh Now , then you will see that the error symbol which was sitting in front of Dataset Refresh details will disappear and dataset will be refreshed withoutt any issues.

Hope you find it helpful 🙂

Thank you this solved the issue for me!

excel files stored in One Drive as a Web data source

That is sub-optimal. I would recommend you use the Sharepoint Folder connector instead.
