Create Dynamic PDF Report from Power BI & Publish ZIP Files to Dropbox

I'm researching the feasiblity of a project and would like some feedback / tips & tricks.  At a high-level, I need to create paginated PDF reports from a Power BI Report for a dynamic list of customers and then deliver those files to Dropbox.  I tested some basic functionality using Power Automate (Web) with some success.  I did run into a "Report requested for export is not on dedicated capacity" error message, which I assume I need (at least) a Power BI Premium Per User license, as well as a PPU Workspace which the target report has been published. Though it would be great if someone could confirm.

To recap, I have the following questions:

  • Can Power Automate create paginated PDF reports dynamically, based from a list of customers?
  • Can the workflow get automatically executed (not locally)?
  • Can I create a dynamic naming convention for the PDF reports?
  • Can I push these reports to Dropbox?
  • Are there any volume restrictions / considerations?
  • What licenses would be required for this project?
  • Is a service account recommeded for application and folder permissions?

I understand that this might be better discussing with Power BI Sales Reps.  If so, and if there is a number, that would be great to have.

Thanks!

Hi @Anonymous

Please find the answers to your questions below.

  • Can Power Automate create paginated PDF reports dynamically, based from a list of customers?
    • Yes this should be possible if you have the list of customers, you would use the paginated reports step in Power Automate.
  • Can the workflow get automatically executed (not locally)?
    • Yes this can done using the Power Automate feature.
  • Can I create a dynamic naming convention for the PDF reports?
    • Potentially yes, once again using Power Automate to change the name of the report before saving to Dropbox.
  • Can I push these reports to Dropbox?
    • Yes this is possible to create a file in dropbox
  • Are there any volume restrictions / considerations?
    • You might have to stager the use of the paginated reports so that the cube is not overloaded. This can be done by putting in a delay for Power Automate.
  • What licenses would be required for this project?
    • I think you would need a Power Automate Premium License.
    • And a Power BI Premium Per user license.
  • Is a service account recommeded for application and folder permissions?
    • Yes when using Power BI it would be better so that there are no password expiry issues.
