I'm working with a client who wants to have ownership of the report files and develop them further. I've been developing the reports within a Dataverse (CDS) environment that is a replicate of the client dataverse environment with similar table names etc. Everything should be the same after just changing the data source from Queries via transform data. And yea, we use a DirectQuery connection as visuals need to change at instant.
So, when I sent the report to the client, they try to open the report and a prompt asks them to sign in to our CDS environment, which they can't naturally do. Click cancel -> report doesn't open.
Before that, I changed all the query sources to refer to their environment name, Close & Applied. After this the app states that there are "pending changes in your queries..." I try to apply, but a prompt asks me to log into the client environment, which I can't do. I let it be.
Anyway, I go to data source settings and remove the global permission to my own Dataverse environment so that the only thing that is now visible in data source settings is the client environment, in "data sources in current file". I save the file, choose to "Apply later" the changes to queries and send it over to client. And then, they can't open the file as it prompts for signing in into _my_ environment, which I tried to erase from the file. But, maybe it's still there somewhere?
Also, if this is not a good way to transfer Direct Query + Dataverse report files to client, I'm happy to learn a better way!

@AnttiKai Make your dataverse environment a parameter in your queries. Save the file as a PBIT (template) then it will prompt to re-establish the data source locations and credentials.
@Greg_Deckler It seems to work! I'll try it out with the client probably at the end of this week and come back here then. Big thanks!
@Greg_Deckler Works perfectly, and managed to move forward with the client. Good experience also as the prompt can be personalized. Thanks a lot for the tip! I'll share it with others from our organization as well 🙂
