Banner messages to alert users in PowerBI

Hi everyone,

Is there some form of popup/banner that can be created in the PowerBI service or upon opening reports? The use case is that we when have downtime/issues with our source servers we want to issue a notification upon opening the report or accessing the PowerBI portal (app.powerbi.com) so that the users are immediately aware.

I am aware on being able to create popups on reports but that is on a per-dashboard basis, which we want to avoid. We would prefer not to perform refreshes/republishing in order to change these popups.

I have used visuals which support HTML and iframes to display a page live from an intranet/Sharepoint without refreshing the dataset, but getting around security measures is difficult. For example - even reading an embedded HTML placed in Sharepoint to be used on an iframe doesn't work.

Happy to hear any thoughts and ideas.

Hi @Compelica,

Thanks @Akash_Varuna for Addressing the issue.

You can find a detailed explanation of adding dynamic messages via a parameter table for report-level alerts in the following blog post:

Thanks @Akash_Varuna . Don't have admin rights for (1) currently but would try around with that option.

(2) is a viable solution, but not too easy to perform as for some reason - when we use our Office 365 ID to sign into PowerBI and an object in Sharepoint is embedded in, it ends up blank; likely has to do something with sign-in. For intranet it doesn't work either because the PowerBI service technically can't 'reach' the intranet, and hosting pages public is definitely something ITSec will not allow.

Could you describe more on (3)? Thank you

Hi @Compelica Power BI does not natively support popups you could try this work arounds maybe

  • Use Admin Portal > Service Announcements to notify all Power BI users about downtime.
  • Embed live SharePoint/intranet pages using IFRAME visuals in reports.
  • Add dynamic messages via a parameter table for report-level alerts.
If this post helped please do give a kudos and accept this as a solution
    Thanks In Advance
