Currently an App will automatically get refreshed when there is a data refresh. But if there is any change in report layout, app needs to be updated manually.

As pallavi_r said, you don't need to update your application when you refresh a dataset. The refreshed data will automatically appear in the app. When you change the structure of a report (add, edit visuals, etc.), you really need to update your app. These changes don't automatically appear in the app. You can refer to the following link:
