Hi ,
I’ve encountered an issue with the Power BI “View Usage Metrics Report” feature.
Using this option, I have created multiple usage log reports to track dashboard views. All dashboards are published in a web portal, but they are connected in two different ways:
Some dashboards are linked through direct report links, and
Some dashboards are embedded using workspace ID and report ID.
The issue is that when users open dashboards linked via direct links, their views are successfully captured in the usage metrics report. However, for dashboards that are accessed through links using workspace ID and report ID, the views are not being captured in the log report.
We prefer not to change the existing portal links, so I’m looking for guidance or a workaround to ensure that usage for these dashboards (connected via workspace and report IDs) is also tracked correctly in the usage metrics report.
Could you please suggest how we can capture these views without modifying the portal link structure?
Thanks in advance for your help.
Best regards,
Ajit

Hi @Ajit48u04f04u ,Power BI’s Usage Metrics Report only logs activity for reports accessed via direct report/dashboard links or through Power BI apps.
When reports are embedded, viewing activity is considered external embedding and is not tracked by the standard usage metrics feature. this is a limitation of Power BI. According to Microsoft’s documentation, the built-in Usage Metrics Report does not capture views for dashboards or reports when they are embedded using the “app-owns-data” or “user-owns-data” flows or via the “Publish to web” option.

I’d encourage you to submit your detailed feedback and ideas via Microsoft's official feedback channels, such as the Microsoft Fabric Ideas.
Feedback submitted here is often reviewed by the product teams and can lead to meaningful improvement. since clearer guidance would definitely help capacity administrators interpret these metrics more confidently. This helps the product group prioritize improvements, and the more customers that raise this, the faster it gets addressed.
Thanks
