Unable to Load Model error message

I have a group of users who receive and "Unable to Load Model" error message.  Another group of users have no issues with the same report.

We validated that all the users have been upgraded to same licensing through our 365 subscription.

My report sits on a Workspace and the data sits on OneDrive for Business (my account).  I have a on-premise gateway installed and it shows it is running and has valid connection.

Most of my users when trying to access the report for the first time, signed up for "free account".  Now they have all been granted a license.  None of these users would have installed the desktop version.  They only need to be able to view and interact with the report, not build the report or change this particular report.  I do not know how to tell if the user's account has switched over when they view the report.

I'm at a loss on how to debug the issue and where to look next.  I have search for similar issues, but have not found a resolution yet.  Can someone point me in the right direction to try to resolve this?

Here is a screenshot of the error:

Hi, @zz99b0

In fact, my previous answer focused on the issue of permissions, and I also reminded you to check the permissions of the workspace and datasets. But it seems that you didn’t care about this, and we ended up going in another direction. But I'm glad it was resolved in the end.

Generally speaking, if it is a simple report sharing, the permissions of the dataset are set by yourself when sharing, but if the user is granted access to the workspace, the permissions of the dataset will be automatically defined according to the access of the workspace.
If you don’t want users to modify or create your reports, you can change user access to 'viewer'.

Thanks again for hanging w/ me.

1.  The data says it refreshes and I can access the report and I see the new data through web browser (as if I'm a user).

2.  So, not sure which link above you wanted me to check, but here is what I have:

  • On the report, I only have granted access to specific people, as this report is not open to the entire organization.  Do I need to create a link for "People in your organization"?
  • On the dataset, I again, only granted direct access to specific people.  The same list as the report.  Do I need to create a link?
  • On the OneDrive, I also only granted direct access to specific people. The same list as the report.

3.  I am meeting w/ one of my end users late this afternoon to test each link.  Three questions:

  • Because I have mapped in the gateway for my personal harddrive, do you know if it checks those links eventhough they are not referenced in the published report, but is part of the data transformation M code?
  • On my Gateway Cluster Settings .. I do not have any of the 3 checkboxes selected.  Do I need to check the "Allow user's cloud data sources to refresh through this gateway cluster.  These cse could data sources do nt need to be configured under this gateway cluster."
  • Do I even need a gateway?  I vaguely recall reading that perhaps if the data is on One Drive, I don't need a gateway?  Would it be easier if I moved the data to the SharePoint subsite that my workspace is on?

I will post back the results of testing each URL link on my data sources.

Thanks again!

Jennifer

Hi, @zz99b0

You can try to turn on this feature, because you have both local data and cloud data. Query is generally mixed query. Even the data in the cloud will pass through the gateway.

Because you are using a web connector, you need a gateway even if the data is on onedrive.

Unless you are importing files directly in the service.

Like this:

You can also try to connect in anonymous mode in the web connector to see if it solves the problem.

The error message is not clear, we can only eliminate the problems one by one.

I think I have it finally solved.  Here is what I did:

  • Created a new workspace
  • Granted users access to the workspace.  I had not done that previously.  I only wanted users granted access to specific reports, as I knew my workspace would grow in the future and I need to be able to segregate users.
  • Deleted my gateway altogether.

So at this juncture:

  • Users are granted access to the entire workspace as a Member
  • Users are granted read access to my OneDrive folder via "Links giving access"

I really wanted more constrained access as I do not want users creating their own reports at this point, as the data model is not bullet-proof.  As you really must have a complete understanding of the data model.  But it gets me past my existing issue.

Not sure this is the right answer, but at least I'm totally dead in the water.

Thanks again for all your assistance.  I apologize if you felt I was ignoring your recommendations, it certainly was not my intention, as I have alot vested in making this work given the visibility.

I'm am still new and thought I was following what you suggested.  I had checked permissions on the report, data sources, gateway, and OneDrive.  And to be totally honest, workspace itself didn't connect in my brain, since I had granted access to the report itself.

I do appreciate all your help.
