Does filtering rows in power query benefit my power bi data model? or does the benefit arise from filtering before it reaches power query?

It does help in reducing the size of your mode. However if your data source support query folding you can also do that. In query folding, certain operations are pushed back to the source system for processing. If your filter conditions can be folded, filtering at the source may be more efficient. The ideal situation would be to filter as much data as you can before it reaches power query. It can be as simple as a where clause in your sql statement.
