Hi there,
I'm new in PowerBI and just under some tests on data import. I downloaded the sample model "Sales & Returns Samples", and published the model to my own workspace. I got the data from "Power BI semantic model" in a new window, however, I faced problems about unable to retrieve the tables in the model, as well as unable to import another data source. The problem is shown as where I highlighted in the file screenshot below, it can be seen that I only had options for report and model view but no access to table view. Meanwhile, options for getting data from others sources became grey.
There was another difference is at the right bottom conner of my screen, it had a discription "Connected live to the Power Bl semantic model: Sales & Returns Sample v201912 in My workspace" which was not seen in other model I had worked on before.
I also checked my permission, and it was shown as I had the full permissions.
So I am wondering what I have missed in the process and how to solve the problem. Thanks in advance.
Cheers,
Ronny
You seem to be running a rather old version of Power Bi Desktop. Upgrade to a newer version or enable the preview feature on yours that allows to convert live connections to direct query .
Hi Ibendlin,
Thank you very much for your prompt reply.
I think I am using the most up-to-date version as shown below.
Meanwhile, I am not sure about "convert live connections to direct query" belonging to which option under preview feature. My current selected features still let me access data in live connection mode.
Are there any other approaches? Thank you very much.
Cheers,
Ronny
Looks like it's the "My Workspace" part that throws you off. Seems to be that the feature I described is limited to Premium Workspaces.
I see, does that mean that it is not a service of Power BI pro version? Are Users without premium version not able to reload published model data to a new project, and only able to reload data from other sources? Thanks.
Hi @RonnyABC ,
You are connecting to the semantic model using live connection mode. No data is saved in live connection mode, so the second view (i.e., the table view) does not appear, which is an expected behavior.
You can click here ( Make changes to this model ) to convert the LiveConnection schema to DirectQuery, which will extend some of the modeling capabilities.

Hi Gao, Thank you very much for your answer. Unfortunately, it seems that my screenshot is a little different with yours, it can be seen that mine don't have "make changes to this model" option like yours, and it is also unclickable. Anything else I need to do to get this option?
Thanks in advance again.
Cheers,
Ronny
Connect to a different semantic model, one that is not hosted on "My Workspace" but on a PPU or Premium workspace.
Thank you very much Ibendlin, so is that still an issue of premium version, the owner of the workspace must be a premium user?
No, the workspace must reside on a Premium capacity, The term "workspace owner" is deprecated. Nowadays we say "workspace admin" but that is unrelated to your issue.
Thanks Ibendlin, and sorry for the misleading term I used.
It seems that I am not able to set a new workspace with premium capacity as the apply button was grey. So as a pro version user, I am able to load data from the semantic model in other's premium workspace but I am not able to set one for my own. Is that correct?
Thank you very much, Ibendlin. The link truely descibed my case and mentioned about transferring to directquery. However, it seems not to see how to do that.
Cheers,
Ronny
See my earlier reply. Won't work with semantic models from "My Workspace".
Sorry Ibendlin, I searched "Won't work with semantic models from 'My Workspace'" in your posts, and can only find your reply on my query. Could you provide specific link for your answer? Thanks.
