Hi,
I am connecting to an Azure Analysis Services database via direct query, but I would like to import the data in order to edit the queries. However, when I try to import and then select edit, the edit queries screen just continues to load and nothing comes up. I am thinking this could be because of the data size. Would I have to do an MDX or DAX query before selecting import to filter the data prior to loading the edit queries screen? If so, can anyone suggest a good beginnger guide for how to use MDX or DAX queries to load tables from a database?

@Anonymous,
Yes. The issue is related to data size. It is better to input an MDX or DAX query in the highlighted textbox to get required columns and rows, then import data to Power BI Desktop.
Moreover, you can start with the following blogs about writing MDX or DAX queries.
How to query a SSAS Tabular model database with MDX expressions
How to query a SSAS Tabular model database using DAX functions
