I have a gateway installed on the on-premise server (SQL) but everytime my scheduled refreshes fail. I have no idea why...
When I connect to my SQL database locally I need a VPN. Could that be the problem?
This is my gateway:
And this is the message I get:

@Anonymous,
To make the refresh process smooth, please make sure that the on-premises gateway has access to your SQL database. In your scenario, are you able to connect to the SQL Server database from other applications such as SSMS and Excel which are located at the server that has gateway installed?
In addition, the computer that installed gateway should be always turned on and connected to the Internet, otherwise, refresh may fail.

Lydia
The SQL server is hosted on an internal network on Azure. The SQL server can only be reached via VPN, however the SQL server does have an outgoing connection to the Internet. The On Prem Gateway can connect to PowerBI.
The On Prem gatway is installed on the SQL server so it has always access to the database.
I expect that when my laptop is switched off the datarefresh would work but unfortunately it only refreshes when my laptop is on with my VPN connected.
Thanks for your response,
Wieke
@Anonymous,
Does the server that install gateway is always on? Do you see any error message in Refresh History?
Regards,
Lydia
All my refreshes fail when my laptop is not connected to VPN. It seems strange because I think I'm using a gateway that is independent of my laptop....
This was the message I got:
And sometimes I see this warning:
Cannot connect to the mashup data source.
