Refresh data for Direct Query

In the documentation at https://powerbi.microsoft.com/en-us/documentation/powerbi-refresh-data/

it is mentioned that for Live connections and Direct Query for data sources on cloud, gateway is not required and that data is refreshed automatically approximately every hour when there is no user interaction.

However it lists only Azure and Spark under the list of cloud data sources.

1. Is it also applicable for other cloud based data sources like Impala and will the data in dataset get refreshed as per the schedule?

2. If data source is in a private cloud, does the scheduled refresh work for live connection ?

It would be really helpful if Microsoft can list all data sources and support/ need for data refresh with/ without using on-premise gateway as it would help suggest the approach.

Hi @Anonymous,

The sentence you mention is not applicable for Impala. As stated in this official article,  future plans include enabling refresh support using the Power BI Gateway, in other words, gateway is required when refreshing data source in Power BI Service.  And as indicated by this official article, we are not able to schedule refresh for Impala in Power BI Service.

Besides, which data source do you refer to in the second question?

I m refering to the same data source (Impala) in my second question as well.

It may be hosted on Azure Private Cloud/ Azure VM

Hi @Anonymous,

Gateway is also required when you host Impala on Azure Private Cloud/ Azure VM.
