If I am being given access to company databases, do I need a DMS and then use Power Pivot on top of the DMS or is there a way to use Power Pivot as a DMS and visualize the tables in excel? I was previously using SQL Express and I figured I would just write queries in PowerPivot to pull from there. Is this the right approach? Thanks.

I think you don't need dms, you can directly use excel to connect sql database.
