Hello,
I'm currnetly working on my first project wihtin Power BI and had some questions about data modelling, and have found some useful threads already that have helped me make a start on my project.
The question I would like to ask is which is the better way to model data that is being used wihtin Power BI:
- Within Power BI or at the data source.
Currently I have data saved in excel which is model in a conventional way;
Example Table 1
Tracking membership numbers over different years for each sport
| Sport Code | 2017 | 2018 | 2019 | 2020 | 2021 | 2022 |
| Sport 1 | 1000 | 1100 | 1100 | 1200 | 1000 | 1200 |
| Sport 2 | 1500 | 1600 | 1600 | 1500 | 1200 | 1500 |
| Sport 3 | 2000 | 2100 | 2100 | 2000 | 1600 | 2000 |
Example Table two
Breaking total membership down into age groups per year. (In this example I would have a table for each year)
2022 Table
| Sport Code | Under 13 | 13 - 18 | Seniors | Masters |
| Sport 1 | 300 | 300 | 300 | 300 |
| Sport 2 | 400 | 400 | 400 | 300 |
| Sport 3 | 500 | 500 | 500 | 500 |
Some of the threads I have read on this forum and thorugh Youtube videos have shown the data being transformed in Power BI to look like the following:
| Sport Code | Year | Age Group | Member Total |
| Sport 1 | 2022 | Under 13 | 300 |
| Sport 1 | 2022 | 13 - 18 | 300 |
| Sport 1 | 2022 | Senior | 300 |
| Sport 1 | 2022 | Masters | 300 |
| Sport 2 | 2022 | Under 13 | 400 |
What I would like to know is, would it cause issues if I just remodelled the data in excel to be in this format?
Given it is a relatively simple data set that will be visualised in basic formats.
Thanks in advance for any support.
Solved! Go to Solution.
In Power BI, it is recommended that whatever can be done at the source, the same must be done. Hence, you can do these transformations in Excel. This won't cause any issue but the recommended way to go.
Thank you for your response.
So just to clarify you are suggesting that best practice is to do these transformations in Power BI.
Here source means Excel not Power BI.
