I have this use case: Business User has a xls that they update from time to time. The would like to share this to all Power BI users to be used for Power BI report creation. The business user updates the xls from time to time and they would like all users to get those updates.
I'm a bit confused at how to solve this. My immediate thought was to put the excel file on One Drive to get the 1hr refresh. I'm not clear on how to share this to all users via one drive (and how to inform them that the data exists other then mass email). I looked at power bi groups and that would work but has the drawback of a public group showing up for everyone. I looked at creating a Power BI dataset from the xls stored on my OneDrive and then publshing this as a content pack. The negative here is that as soon as a person touches the dataset the dataset is then decoupled from the original content pack so I'm not clear if they would see updates made to the data.
I also do not want to just bring the excel workbook in as excel services. The intent is to allow users to create Power BI reports from it.
Anyone have the answer? Thanks in advance.
If you download and install the Power BI Personal Gateway, this supports refreshing data from an xls file on a local drive. You can specify how often the refresh takes place.
