How to deal with xml column that sometimes contains values and sometimes contains a table

I have a xml source that I need to consume and have no control over.

Within it several elements sometimes contain a sinlge value and sometimes contain a table of values.

When I parse this using Power Query I can see no way to say 'if Table' do this else 'do that'.

If i try and do a table expand on the column it throws an error on the records that just have a single value and if i do not do the expand the records that contain multiple values just show as [Table] in the front end.

Any help greatly appreciated
