Enterprise Gateway with SQL Server 2008 R2

We use Dynamics GP 2013 with SQL Server 2008 R2.

Can the gateway be set up with SQL Server 2008 R2?

We also have SQL Server 2012 R2, could we install there and link to the 2008 R2 server?

Does anyone know of options that will enable me to consume (close to real time) onprem SQL Server 2008 R2 data from PowerBI dashboard?

According to this article, tabular is supported on SQL Server 2008

According to this thread, SQL Server 2008 R2 supports Direct Query

So, my answer would be yes, works.

It was for me.  Has to be Direct query then the gateway worked for me as of Sept 2018 version with on premise SQL 2008 R2 with sql auth (Basic auth).
