Data Format and Bidirectional Filtering

I have an excel file that is formatted like the below (using Arizona as an example):

natasha519_0-1643039898576.png

There are a total of 50 recipients, there are 4 different tag categories and then within those tag categories there are 'tags'. I have created a visualziation that has all slicers or chiclets (recipient, strategy, and then 4 lanes for the tag categories with the assigned tags within those categories, see below:

When I select Arizona, Strategy 7, the visual filters like the excel sheet:

Is there a way to filter from bottom up? So selecting a tag first and having the visual filter that way?

Hi @natasha519 ,

I think you may try slicers to filter.

Or use the interaction function between visuals.

Hi @natasha519 ,

Are all of the fields that populate your slicers in the same table? If so, then I don't see any reason why you can't select bottom-up as it is.

What happens now if you select the tag first?

Also, FWIW, I would SERIOUSLY consider putting these choice groups into dropdown slicers 😉

Yes, all of the fields are in the same table as of now. If I select the tag first, the only things that filter are the recipients and strategies but the other tags don't filter. We want the other tags to filter as well.

OK. Still not sure why this is the case.

Any chance you can share the Excel source file and/or the PBIX please?

Make sure to remove any sensitive information please.

Hello - you should use Power Query to shape your data into a star schema (separate the fact and dimension tables).  Then you can have one to many relationships with the filter going from the dimension (1 side of the relationship) to the fact table (many side of the relationship) and your slicers will work appropriately.  Here is a good article explaining this in detail.
