I have an error in one of my queries in power query - I used to just click on the applied step and the DAX coding used to appear and populate- but now it does not, anyway to have this appear?

Sorry, have to correct, in Power Query it is M code, not DAX code. Very different.
Go to the View tab and make sure that Formula Bar is selected.
