Environment: Single server (no domain) hosted on Rackspace running Windows Server 2008 R2 Datacenter and SQL Server 2008R2
Problem Description: I can connect to the gateway from the PowerBI service and it says that's it's good to go. However, when I refresh, I get the dreaded "The server name provided doesn't match the server name on the SQL Server SSL certificate. Please see https://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=394782" (not sure how the link to ADO.NET article is relevant but that's besides the point).
I've investigated other forum responses and they boil down to 2 solutions - Use the FQDN and make sure the SSL certificate name is correct.
Questions:
1) Given my non-domain setup, it can't have a FQDN right? I should just be using the NetBIOS name, right?
2) We currently don't have a certificate mapped to the SQL Server. I didn't see this as a requirement. so how can I be getting a certificate error when there is no certificate?
Actions Taken:
-Standard uninstall/re-install - still not working
-Have tried both Basic and Windows authentication for the data source. - still not working
Please help!
Hi @jallenamdg,
As per this official article, this can occur when the certificate CN is for the servers fully qualified domain name (FQDN) but you only supplied the netbios name for the server. This will cause a mismatch for the certificate.
In your scenario, could you please firstly verify that if SSL is configured on your SQL Server by running the following query? If the encrypt_option column returns True, your SQL Server in configured SSL and certificate is used.
USE master
GO
SELECT encrypt_option FROM sys.dm_exec_connections
GO
In addition, after gateway is installed, Data Management Gateway SSL certificate is also installed. In your case, create FQDN for your server as described in this similar thread, and make the server name within the gateway data source, and the PBIX file, to use the FQDN of the server.
Thanks,
Lydia Zhang
