Created a template that asks which file to point to upon opening but cannot seem to make it point to a sharepoint document. It errors saying the path is either too long or is incomplete? Works for desktop files? Help?

By my tests with the latest version of Power BI Desktop Version: 2.66.5376.1681 64-bit (February 2019) and creating the paramete to get the data in SharePoint online, everything works as expected.
Please check if you have installed the latest version of Power BI Desktop, if not, please update.
In addition, please check if your URL of SharePoint is correct.
You could try to click get data >> Sharepoint connector>> type the URL which you used in Parameter to check if the URL will work.
