Hi all,
With the latest release of Power BI in July, Power BI has developed a new connector for Amazon Athena.
Previously I have connected to this database with Power BI using a ODBC connector. This all went very well and works fine. Today I am trying to do the same with the new connector, but I have a problem with creating custom SQL Queries in combination with the new Amazon Athena Connector. I hoped someone else has faced the same problem and has an answer for me.
With ODBC I am using the following Power Query M code to use a custom SQL Query:
Source = Odbc.Query([DSN], [SQL Query])
With Amazon Athena this is currently not possible, I can only SELECT a table, but not implement custom SQL Query's
Source = AmazonAthena.Databases([DSN], [role])

Hi JeroenR! the problem is that the new connector is in Beta. They are still developing it and it might have some features missing or bugs. I would recommend using ODBC until they finnish the development.
You can go to the release announcement or the following doc of the connector and give Microsoft feedback of your thought or missing feature:
https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/power-query/connectors/amazonathena
https://powerbi.microsoft.com/en-us/blog/power-bi-july-2021-feature-summary/
I hope that helps,
