It depends on the connection mode. For Direct Query, you can returns 1 million rows maximum. If over 1 million rows are returned from DirectQuery, Power BI returns an error (unless in Premium capacity, and the row count is under the admin-set limit).

Use DirectQuery in Power BI Desktop - Power BI | Microsoft Docs

For Import, there is no limitation on the rows of data you can import into Power BI currently. However, Power BI offers two licenses, Power BI (free) and Power BI Pro, with different data capacity limits:

  • Free users have a maximum 1 GB data capacity.
  • Pro users of Power BI Pro have 10 GB maximum capacity.
  • Pro users can create groups, with a maximum 10 GB data capacity each.

For exporting, Currently Power BI has an export limit: 30,000 rows when you export to CSV and 150,000 when you export to Excel.

We are using Direct Query data in PowerBI, per the information you provided in 2020, is there still a limitation on row count in PowerBI (transformation). I am assuming that since this is querying from a SQL DB, there shouldn't be a limitation. However, in one of my reports, I cannot scroll beyond 6419 rows of data, which I find quite peculiar. Please advise.

I have a pro license, thanks for your reply

It depends on your computer specs, but a typical laptop can handle a model with 10s of millions of rows.  The complexity and correctness of your DAX expressions and the number of visuals/calculations on the report page will dictate responsiveness to slicers, etc.  And the data source and the complexity of the data tranformations you do will govern your refresh time.

Power BI can handle billions of rows with the right set up.  In demos, they've shown >1 trillion rows.

Regards,

Pat
