Using Excel/CSV

Hello All,

I am currently using an Excel/CSV based workflow until our devs can build out our live data model. I have completed a few use cases using both Power BI Service and Desktop. Information will be added daily to the reports until the connections go live and I am looking for some advice and the best workflow for providing timely reporting to my users.

I guess my question is, if I use Desktop, because I love the Query Editor :-), do I need to re-Publish and replace the dataset every time I add new data?

If needed I can just format my data in Excel with Get and Transform and only use Power BI Service to build out the reports.

Thoughts?

AG

@terpsbmore You can schedule a refresh up to 8x per day. If you are accessing the Excel files from on premises then you would need to install a Gateway first. The scheduling is done on the dataset in the Service after you've published the report.

If they are adding data to the existing files, then you don't have to do anything to the connection. If they are adding Excel files to a location, you could change the connection to "File" and it would just pick up the new files in whatever actions you've most likely taken in your Query Editor.

@Anonymous If I am simply adding information to the Excel/CSV every day. Would the process be to create in Desktop, Publish to Service, schedule daily/hourly refresh in Service?

 I appreciate the help.
