Hi Guys,

I managed to log into my personal github account where I have within my Organization repositories with Internal access.
I put Owner in connector as "MyCompanyName" and repository Name and getting:

What kind of accesses i need to authorize?

I got prompt to authorize power bi within github when I logged with my personal account...

Best Wishes,
Jacek

1 ACCEPTED SOLUTION

Hi @jaryszek,
The main difference is:

  • GitHub.com: Cloud-hosted, managed by GitHub, with automatic updates and scalability. Ideal for ease of use.
  • On-Premises: Hosted on your infrastructure, offering full control, enhanced security, and compliance but requires maintenance.

Your organization’s users have access to all repositories based on roles (e.g., read, write, admin). To switch between personal and organization repositories, use the profile menu on GitHub.com or configure access via your authentication system (e.g: LDAP, SAML) for on-premises.

You can use GitHub.com for public projects and Enterprise Server for private, compliance-driven ones. Switch between them using the GitHub UI or CLI with separate access tokens/SSH keys. For integrations (e.g: AWS Amplify), ensure the organization grants OAuth permissions in Settings > Applications.

If this response helps, consider marking it as “Accept as solution” and giving a “kudos” to assist other community members.
Thank you.

Hi @jaryszek,
Thank you for reaching out to the Microsoft Fabric Forum Community.

I just tested the GitHub connector from Power BI Desktop using my own repository, and the connection worked successfully from my end. the connector is functioning as expected.

Based on the error message you’re seeing this typically points to one of the following causes:

  • For organization repositories, ensure the Owner field is set to the organization name, not your personal GitHub username and double-check that the repository name is correct.
  • Even though you’ve authorized GitHub with your personal account, organization-level access for third-party apps like Power BI may still need to be approved.
  • Please reach out to your GitHub Org Admin and ask them to authorize Power BI in the GitHub.
  • Ensure your GitHub user account has at least read access to the repository you're trying to connect to.
  • If the repo is marked private or internal, access may be restricted unless permissions are explicitly granted.

Please verify the above and let us know how it goes. If the issue persists even after these checks, feel free to share more details (screenshots, steps, etc.), and we’ll be happy to investigate further.

If this information is helpful, please “Accept as solution” and give a "kudos" to assist other community members in resolving similar issues more efficiently.

Yes,

workaround is to use Web connector to github because with enterprise set up on github for organization it will not work.

Jacek

This sadly only works for GitHub.com. It does not work for GitHub Enterprise On Premise.

thank you, so pity 😞

so It is not possible to connect power bi dekstop to github?
Only by specifying local repository data sources using path?

How to handle in other way?

Best,
Jacek
