Shared Visio link not working in Desktop

I have a visio diagram referenced within my PowerBI report.  It works great for the people that have permissions to the location the Visio document is being referenced from, and that have access to the appropriate licensing for Power BI.

I need to make it accessible to a broader audience, however.  To facilitate this I've published the Power BI report and now more users can access the PowerBI report, but they do not see the Visio diagram as, I assume, they do not have access to the location from which it is referenced in the report.

Following the guidance here: https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/office/add-visio-visuals-to-power-bi-reports-4f09be62-f436-45c2-...  under Using Power BI to Publish to the Web, I've shared the Visio diagram to the broader audience and verified that they can access the Visio diagram.  However, when I go back to update the link to the Visio diagram with the link to the shared Visio within the Power BI report (in accordance  with the document linked above), it does nothing; no error, doesn't refresh, just presents a white area where the Visio diagram should be.

Help or guidance would be appreciated!

Hi @dthorson ,

After your description, we have some confusions. If you can describe it in more detail, it will be helpful for us.

1. Where did the issue occur? The Desktop, Power BI Service, Publish to Web or other places?

2. Could you please try the new incognito window?

3. Is the URL from SharePoint or places?

And you should be aware of the following sign in issues in your post link:

Visio Visual in Power BI Embedded reports

A Power BI report can be embedded in apps such as Microsoft Teams or third-party apps. These apps can block pop-ups such as a sign-in prompt. In this case, the Visio Visual file needs guest access permission in SharePoint Online and OneDrive for Business. Otherwise, Visio Visual keeps prompting to sign in but the app will keep blocking the sign-in pop-up.

Single Sign-on authentication

Visio Visual in Power BI needs access to the Visio diagram you're working with, which means you might see a sign in prompt. In cases where Power BI user sign in information can’t be accessed through Single Sign-on authentication, users trying to view the Power BI report might see a sign in prompt to authenticate themselves working with the Visio Visual.

Internet security zones

If you're still having issues with authentication while working with Visio Visual using Internet Explorer, you may have Power BI and SharePoint in different internet security zones. Add both the Power BI domain and the SharePoint domain to the same security zone in your Internet Options and then try working with the Visio Visual again.

Best regards,

Thank you for your reply.

We have had some success in publishing our report that contains the Visio visual. The user can view the PowerBi report and sees a sign-in message in the Visio visual, this is expected as explained above. We've only been successful with this in the Chrome browser, IE and Firefox don't display the Visio visual after processing the login.

We would like to eliminate the need for the login process completely.

From the Microsoft document I linked in my original post: "To do this, the Visio file being embed must have guest access, allowing web users without having to authenticate. Copy the guest access URL or anonymous sharing for the Visio file by going to OneDrive for Business or SharePoint Online and clicking Share for the Visio file. Now paste this URL into the URL of type the file to open the Visio diagram text box on the Power BI report canvas"

After you perform the instructions above on the PowerBI desktop, with the Guest Access URL for the Visio document, the result in the Visual component of PowerBI Desktop Visio is... Nothing. Accepts the guest access URL, does not display any error messages, nor reloads or update the Visio diagram within the visual component, it's just empty blanks - this is the problem I'm trying to solve.

Does creating the guest access URL also require that the file location be accessible "publicly"? This is a somewhat different process than the public publication of the PowerBI report itself.

Thank you for your response.

We have had some success in publishing our report containing the Visio visual.  The user can see the PowerBi report and sees a login prompt on the Visio visual, this is expected as you have explained above.  We've only had success with this in the Chrome browser, IE and Firefox do not display the Visio visual after the login is processed.

We would like to eliminate the need for the login process altogether.

From the Microsoft document I linked in my original post: "To do this, the Visio file being embedded should have guest access, which enables web users without the need to authenticate themselves. Copy the anonymous sharing or guest access URL for the Visio file by going to OneDrive for Business or SharePoint Online, and clicking Share for the Visio file. Now paste this URL into the Enter file URL to open Visio diagram text box on the Power BI report canvas"

After performing the above guidance in the PowerBI desktop, using the guest access URL for the Visio document, the result in the PowerBI desktop Visio visual component is… nothing.  It accepts the guest access URL, does not display any error message, nor does it reload/refresh the Visio diagram within the visual component, it's just empty whitespace - this is the issue I'm trying to resolve.

Does the creation of the guest access URL also require that the location of the file be 'publically' accessible?  This is a somewhat a different process then than the public publishing of the PowerBI report itself.
