Query is either selecting too many fields Error

I'm using the Salesforce Object Connector, but receive the following error message when loading the data:

DataSource.Error: Query is either selecting too many fields or the filter conditions are too complicated.

I won't need all columns from the object so I want to reduce the number of columns selected.  I understand how to do this once the connection is established, but given the above error I dont have the option.  The Choose Coulmns button is grayed out.

Any ideas?

Hi @Charles,

This error means the Salesforce query exceeds the field or query-complexity limit. In the current Salesforce Objects connector, use the Select Query option to request only the required fields.

Power BI Connector for Salesforce also provides visual field selection, filters, SOQL, and data preview.

Hi @Charles were you able to find a solution? As a workaround, maybe you can try to test your connection with a 3rd party connector, which pulls data directly from the SF objects connector. I've tried windsor.ai, supermetrics (which doesn't have PBI as a destination, so you first have to export to Google Sheets and then export to PBI) and funnel.io. I stayed with windsor because it is much cheaper so just to let you know other options. In case you wonder, to make the connection first search for the Salesforce connector in the data sources list:

After that, just grant access to your Salesforce account using your credentials, then on preview and destination page you will see a preview of your Salesforce fields:

There just select the fields you need. It is also compatible with custom fields and custom objects, so you'll be able to export them through windsor.  Finally, just select PBI as your data destination and finally just copy and paste the url on PBI --> Get Data --> Web --> Paste the url.

Hi @Charles,

In Query Editor of Power BI Desktop, please open Advanced Editor of your current query, then reduce columns in the code within Advanced Editor. There is an example for your reference.
