Is there a way for PowerShell to be used as datasource directly instead of having to use R scripting or CData ODBC Driver for PowerShell?  Also can Power BI desktop be automated with PowerShell?

Yes, you can do certain things with Power BI Desktop and PowerShell: https://github.com/DevScope/powerbi-powershell-modules
