Power KPI visual showing different colours in Service vs Desktop after update to v3.0.3.0

Hi everyone,

I’m seeing a mismatch between Power BI Desktop and the Power BI Service after the recent Power KPI visual update.

  • In Power BI Desktop, the visual version shows as 2.0.0.0, and my configured line colours display correctly (e.g., one series is yellow).

  • In the Power BI Service, the same report now uses Power KPI 3.0.3.0, and one of the series colours has changed to grey instead of yellow.

  • If I edit the visual directly in the Service and fix the colour, it looks correct—but when I republish from Desktop, the colour reverts to grey again.

I’ve tried:

  • Re-importing the Power KPI visual from AppSource in Desktop (which says it’s v3.0.3.0), but Desktop still shows version 2.0.0.0 in the visual’s “About” info.

  • Confirming that AppSource lists Power KPI v3.0.3.0 (updated 9/3/2025).

It seems like the Service has auto-updated to 3.0.3.0, while Desktop hasn’t actually applied the update—even though it says it will.

Questions:

  1. Is there a known issue with Desktop not updating to Power KPI v3.0.3.0 even though AppSource shows that version?

  2. Is there another location where Power BI Desktop caches custom visuals in recent builds?

  3. How can I force Desktop to actually update to 3.0.3.0 so that formatting is consistent between Desktop and the Service?

Thanks in advance — any guidance or confirmation from others seeing the same thing would be appreciated.

I received this response from the Power BI Custom Visuals Support team:

The behavior you’re observing is expected and relates to the current release state of the Power KPI visual. After a new version is published to AppSource, there is typically a short delay before it becomes fully available in production.

In this case, version 3.0.3.0 of Power KPI has been temporarily blocked from deployment due to a bug identified after publication. As a result, both Power BI Desktop and the Power BI Service are currently using version 2.0.0.0, even though AppSource may still display the newer version number in its description.

A new build of Power KPI containing the fix is planned to be released soon.

Please note that Power BI Desktop does not cache the visual to preserve an older version.

But the new version 3.0.3.0 displays the color wrongly, but version 2.0.0 display the right way. Can we get 2.0.0 version back?
I don't know any users have the similar issue here.

@eddieisking2000 Looks like something has gone bad with v3.0.3.0 - bring back v2!

Hi @MattB-Motive,

Thanks for sharing your experience, The color inconsistency appears to be linked to rendering changes introduced in version 3.0.3.0. At this point, the recommended approach would be to raise a support ticket with Microsoft so the visual’s publisher can review and roll back or patch the release.

Hi @MattB-Motive,

This color display difference is likely due to a version mismatch between Power BI Desktop and the Power BI Service. The Service updates to the latest certified version of the Power KPI visual (v3.0.3.0), while Power BI Desktop might use a cached older version (v2.0.0.0), which can cause formatting or color inconsistencies. Power BI Desktop usually stores cached visuals at:

C:\Users\<username>\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Power BI Desktop\CustomVisuals.

You can try closing Power BI Desktop, delete the cached Power KPI visual folder in that directory, then reopen Power BI Desktop. Go to Get more visuals -> AppSource, re-import the Power KPI visual, re-apply your color formatting, and republish the report. This should ensure both environments display colors consistently.

Thanks for your reply @v-sgandrathi.

I got the same advice from ChatGPT. However, it doesn't appear that Power BI uses this directory for cached files (at least not anymore) - any other ideas?
