Power BI Visualizations do not update

Hi,

I’m facing an issue in Power BI Desktop where my visualizations do not update. I’ve refreshed the data source, and I can see that the tables views reflect the updated data. However, the visualizations don’t show the updated data.

For example, if I create the exact same visualization again, it reflects the updated data correctly. But the previously created visualization continues to display the old data. I don’t understand how this is possible. Filters, slicers are working fine.

Do you have any suggestions??

Hi @Anonymous ,

Based on the testing, using Excel file as data source. When refreshing the data source, the visualizations show the updated data.

So, try to check the Filters pane. If you set a filter for a certain condition and the updated data does not meet the condition, then the visualization will not show the updated data.

Hi @Anonymous
Could there be any slicers hidden from view or positioned behind other visuals? I once had a colleague who couldn't figure out why his visuals weren't updating, and it turned out that slicers were placed behind the visible visuals. You can use the selection pane to see a list of all visuals on the page, including those that are hidden.

Hi,

As per our understanding you're experiencing an issue in Power BI Desktop where, after refreshing your data source, existing visualizations don't reflect the updated data, even though the table views do. Creating new visualizations shows the correct data, but existing ones continue to display outdated information. Here are some potential causes and solutions to address this problem:

  1. Cached Visuals:
  • Issue: Power BI caches visuals to enhance performance, which might cause them to display outdated data after a refresh.
  • Solution: Try refreshing the visuals manually by clicking the "Refresh" button in Power BI Desktop. If that doesn't work, consider closing and reopening the report to clear the cache. In some cases, pressing Ctrl + F5 can force a full refresh of the visuals.

  1. "Include in Report Refresh" Setting:
  • Issue: If the "Include in Report Refresh" option is disabled for a query, the data might not update during a refresh operation.
  • Solution: In Power Query Editor, ensure that the "Include in Report Refresh" option is enabled for all relevant queries. To check this, right-click on each query in the Queries pane and verify that "Include in Report Refresh" is checked.

  1. Visual-Level Filters:
  • Issue: Existing visuals might have filters applied that prevent them from displaying the updated data correctly.
  • Solution: Check the filters applied to the visuals in question. Ensure that there are no filters restricting the data unexpectedly. Adjust or remove filters as necessary to allow the visuals to display the updated data.
  1. Report-Level Issues:
  • Issue: There might be issues at the report level causing visuals not to update properly.
  • Solution: Consider creating a copy of the report or the specific visuals to see if the issue persists. If the copied visuals update correctly, it might indicate a problem with the original report file. In such cases, recreating the report or affected visuals might be necessary.
  1. Power BI Service Considerations:
  • Issue: If you're working with reports published to the Power BI Service, cached data might cause visuals to display outdated information.
  • Solution: In the Power BI Service, use the "Refresh" button to update the visuals. If the issue persists, try clearing your browser cache or using a different browser to rule out caching issues. Additionally, ensure that the dataset is set to refresh appropriately in the service.

By systematically checking these areas, you should be able to identify and resolve the issue causing your Power BI visuals to display outdated data after a refresh.

Hope this helps.

Thanks!
