Using the same server and database I connect instantly with SSMS, Power BI Desktop, and Power Query in Excel. However, it won't connect in Power BI Report Builder.
I am trying to create a paginated report in Power BI Report Builder. I click Get Data, put in the connection data and sign in with my credentials. When I try to connect I get the message:
"An exception occurred: DataSource.Error: Microsoft SQL: A network-related or instance-specific error occurred while establishing a connection to SQL Server. The server was not found or was not accessible. Verify that the instance name is correct and that SQL Server is configured to allow remote connections. (provider: Named Pipes Provider, error: 40 - Could not open a connection to SQL Server) "
If I force a tcp connection I get:
"An exception occurred: DataSource.Error: Microsoft SQL: A network-related or instance-specific error occurred while establishing a connection to SQL Server. The server was not found or was not accessible. Verify that the instance name is correct and that SQL Server is configured to allow remote connections. (provider: TCP Provider, error: 0 - Not enough memory resources are available to process this command.) "
Any idea what is going on?

There is no gateway involved. It is just an on premises SQL server. There must be something different about how Power Query is implemented in Report Builder from the way it is done in Power BI Desktop or Excel. I ended up creating the report in Excel. Sometimes the old tools still work better than the new ones.
Hi @jtwohig01 ,
Based on the description, try to check the SQL Server is set up to allow remote connections.

We know that the SQL Server is set up for remote connections and is reachable since SSMS, Power BI Desktop, and Excel Power Query all work. It is only Power BI Report Builder that fails.
Hi,
If using get data to connect SQL Server, gateway data source are not supported.

I just realized that I can connect creating the data source using the old method in Report Builder but it is Power Query that isn't working. Of course, it was the Power Query functionality I wanted to use.
