Hello, I have two questions on mapping data in Power BI. Thanks in advance!
1) Does anyone know what type of file I would need in order to apply the outline of a zone to a map? For clarity, if there is a disease management zone in a state, do you know what file type I would need to try and over lay that zone on existing maps in Power BI? I'm currently mostly using the regular "Map" visual but I'd like to overlay a disease management area. Some of these areas are full counties and some are based on other geographic features. I'm unsure if I can use the "Map" visual or if I'll need to use an ArcGIS map. Anyone who has good references on where to get help on this too, I would happily accept that information as well.
2) Does anyone know of an online resource that provides centralized latitude and longitude for a township and range? I currently have data I want to map within a specific State and only have the township and range data, and I'm unsure how to map this in Power BI. I'm thinking if there is an online resource to get centralized lat/longs by State, County, Township, Range, +/- Section, I could map that way.

Hi @TBStacey,
Just wanted to follow up. If the shared guidance worked for you, that’s wonderful hopefully it also helps others looking for similar answers. If there’s anything else you'd like to explore or clarify, don’t hesitate to reach out.
Thank you.
Thanks for all the info! I wasn't able to find centralized lat/longs for each township and range, but I was able to find a map expert to pull polygon data from an ARGGIS site associated with the State and he was able to use that to create a centralized lat/long for each township/range which I now can connect to via PBI. Thanks again all, I may end up using some of your resources for other related projects!
GADM.org has some map files but the coordinates are for polygons so you can perhaps get the average for each locaiton.
Hi @TBStacey
The Map Shaper visual allows for ShapeFile, TopoJSON, and/or GeoJSON files. You can probably begin your journey by heading over to Data.Gov or United States Census Bureau and search for the data granularity you need / want.
I believe it goes all the way down to block level which is more than enough to get your township data. Download whatever granularity it is you need and then merge them together. You can use a site called https://mapshaper.org/ or https://findthatpostcode.uk/tools/merge-geojson , or other alternatives to merge them together.
