Power BI Desktop – Installation Issue | Mashup Engine Error

Hi All,

I am facing an issue while trying to install and open Power BI Desktop on my system.

Error Message:
“The type initializer for 'Microsoft.Mashup.Host.Document.PlatformDependentOptions' threw an exception.”

What I have tried so far:

  • Uninstalled and reinstalled Power BI Desktop (both Microsoft Store and direct download versions)
  • Installed Microsoft Edge WebView2 Runtime
  • Installed .NET Desktop Runtime (x64)
  • Tried installing in a new Windows user account
  • Verified ODBC settings
  • Restarted the system multiple times

Despite all the above steps, I am still getting the same Mashup Engine error when launching Power BI.

System Details:

  • OS: Windows 11, version 25H2 (64-bit)
  • Power BI Version: 2.152.1279.0

Ask:
Can someone please help me understand what is causing this issue and how to fix it?
Is this related to .NET, WebView2, or any missing dependencies?

Any guidance would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance!

Hi @InsightSpark

This looks more like a Power BI Desktop startup/runtime issue than an ODBC issue.

Since the error appears when Power BI Desktop launches, I would focus less on ODBC and more on the local environment around the Mashup Engine.

A few things worth trying:

Completely uninstall Power BI Desktop.
Delete leftover local Power BI Desktop folders from the user profile.
Reinstall only one version first, preferably the standard download version, not both versions together.
Repair or reinstall Microsoft Edge WebView2 Runtime.
Repair or reinstall the required .NET Desktop Runtime (x64).
Check whether an older on-premises data gateway is installed on the same machine, and if so, update or remove it temporarily.
Temporarily disable antivirus / endpoint protection or run the installation with local admin rights, if your organization allows that.
Reboot the machine and test Power BI Desktop before installing additional drivers or custom connectors.

At this stage, this does not look like a normal data source driver problem. It looks more like a local dependency, corrupted component, or machine-level conflict affecting the Mashup Engine during startup.

If none of the above helps, I would recommend opening a Microsoft support ticket, because this is likely an environment-level startup issue rather than a standard installation problem.

Hi @InsightSpark

Mashup Engine error is usually due to a corrupted WebView2 or Power BI local cache, not the model.
So, try uninstalling Power BI and WebView2 Runtime. Delete folders from C drive of Power BI Desktop and Power BI Desktop Store App. Reinstalling latest WebView2 Runtime and Power BI Desktop. If still error, check antivirus group policies blocking WebView2 and try installing an older Power BI version where sometimes it can be version specific bug.

If still issue persists, as Rita mentioned you can raise a ticket.
