Organization SharePoint Online Data Refresh Issue

Hello Power BI experts!

Issue

I am connecting to an organizational SharePoint Online site folder and importing and combining all Excel files into Power BI Desktop within that folder. This works perfectly fine in Power BI Desktop. When I push it to the organization's cloud workspace it refuses to refresh and returns the following error:

  • Data source errorScheduled refresh is disabled because at least one data source is missing credentials. To start the refresh again, go to this dataset's settings page and enter credentials for all data sources. Then reactivate scheduled refresh.

When I navigate to the data source Settings I find that "Data Source credentials" is greyed out.

Things I've tried

I've reviewed the two data sources settings for data in the model within Power BI desktop and both are "signed into".

1. One data source is a web connection to http://www.50states.com/abbreviations.htm and is using "Anonymous" access for this open source. I've changed the source step

= Web.BrowserContents("http://www.50states.com/abbreviations.htm")

to

= Web.Contents("http://www.50states.com/abbreviations.htm")

which is supposed to be an unsecured call per a suggestion I found online. This did not fix the inability to refresh.

2. The other data source is the Organizational SharePoint Online folder and the credentials are my "Organizational Account". I've tried each of the other credential options with no resolution in the lack of refresh in the workspace.

Your assistance is greatly appreciated!

Well, after additional poking around I found that the "Web Source" (#1 above) was the reason for the inability to refresh in an organization workspace (premium). This was annoying to find out after pursuing several attempts and was confirmed by our Microsoft contractor.

Further, the solution to this post provided some additional helpful details: Solved: Re: Unable to connect to web data source - Microsoft Power BI Community

As a workaround:

  1. Using Excel's Power Query to connect to the web source. Learn more about Excel's Power Query.
  2. Make any needed transformations.
  3. Put the Excel file in SharePoint Online.
  4. Connect to the Excel file in SharePoint Online with the web connector.

Alternatively, if the data is static, you can directly copy/paste values into PBI:

1. Copy target values

2. Open Power Query Editor

3. Home tab -> Enter Data

4. Paste values into table
