Multiplying contents of two columns and placing answers in an existing column

Hi,

Basically we have two populated columns A and B and we wish column C to be populated with the product of of the individual entries of columns A and B. Ideally we'd like to avoid calculated columns as this places the new column at the end.

Tried playing about with the advanced editor, but still haven't been able to solve this. Is there something straight forward we're missing?

For your requirement, you can directly multiply two columns, then use CONCATENATE() to concatenate the result with existing column context into single string. The expression can be like:

 = CONCATENATE("existing text",table[col1]*table[col2])

Hello Simon,

We're unable to place the results in an already existing column with your method. We've only been able to create a new column with the results.

Total Labour Cost = CONCATENATE("",tablename[Rate ]*tablename[Total Days to be Billed])

This is what we tried to use, but we get told that the column name already exists. Are you doing this in query editor or data view? Is this a measure or a new column?

We managed to do it using this code in the advanced query editor

In the query editor, you can create a custom column and then drag and drop it to the spot that you want it.

The problem is that we want to do this for a high number of columns. Ideally we'd just like to calculate the amount in each of these columns rather than having to create a calculated column each time and drag/drop. Is there a method for this?

So we want Total Labour Cost to be Rate x Total Days to be Billed (preferably without calculated column).
