Multiple databases

Hello there,

I have two power BI files that use the same database but different permissions for each set of tables. Every time I use one of them I have to enter the credentials of each username which feels a bit overwhelming because I have to ask for these. and when I put one of them the other stops working until I enter the credentials again.
Is there anyway to save the credentials of each username in each file or do I have to keep doing this?

thank you in advance.

Hi @BeshOz ,

Based on the information, power bi currently supports the need to verify credentials every time you fetch data. Credentials for data sources are managed at the data source level, not at the individual file level.

Try to publish to the service, managing semantic model access as workaround.

Solved: connect to the same database with 2 different user... - Microsoft Fabric Community

Thank you! publishing it solved the problem, although I have to work on web version now but it works and I don't need to enter the credentials anymore.

Hi Rohit,
Apperantly the database is the same but the permissions are different. like only the username and the password are different. so that does not work as I have just tried to do it.
Sorry for that.

You can save credentials for each SQL Server in Power BI:

  1. Save Credentials: Open File > Options and settings > Data source settings in Power BI Desktop. Select your SQL Server under Global permissions or Current File.Click Edit Permissions, enter your credentials, and save.

  2. Use DirectQuery or Import Mode: Ensure each file is set to its respective connection mode.
