Modelling Parameters in Power BI with Semantic model connection

Hi there,

When I am connecting to a semantic model (e.g. created in a Lakehouse), the Parameters button in Modelling greys out:

Is there way to use parameters in a situation like this, if yes, where can it be defined?

I have found only a workaround: if I use "Make changes to this model", then a local model added to the .pbix file, but the connection will change to DirectQuery. And also this is a permanent change, there is no way to revert back.

Is this really the only way? Is there any disadvantage to switch to DirectQuery in this situation?

Many thanks,

sorry for asking a lot of questions.

Tamas

Hi @tvandorfffy

Using parameters with semantic models directly in Power BI Desktop does have limitations, especially when the connection is not in DirectQuery mode. Parameters in Power BI are mainly used to handle queries that can be modified directly in Power BI Desktop, which is why you may find that the Parameters button is disabled when connecting to a semantic model in a way that does not allow local query modification.

Here are two links detailing the differences between the two modes, along with example applications. Hope it helps.

Please vote!

It means that you can exclude query to be refreshed not only in power bi desktop - also within power bi service without failing because of data source credentials.
