How to change a data source without changing the existing report ID

I'm trying to refactor some existing reports to use a common Power BI dataset. Ideally I don't want to break report users' bookmarks so I want to keep the existing published reportId. So far I can successfully:

1. Use the Rebind API to connect the current published report to the new data source

2. Update the data source settings in Power BI Desktop to connect to the new data source

The problem comes when I try to publish the report from Desktop. I get the error message "A report has already been published with this name. Please rename your file and publish again". Is there a step I'm missing or an alternate approach to change the data source without changing the reportId?

Hi @jlh9 ,

Based on testing, changing the data source and republishing does not change the report ID and personal bookmarks are not lost.

The report id has not changed and the personal bookmark is still there.

Note, however, that bookmarks only save the following. Bookmarks do not save the current data. After changing the data source and publishing, the bookmark uses the fields in the new data source.

How to get your questions answered quickly -- How to provide sample data

Hi Gao,

In your testing have you tried a scenario where the data source changes from a direct Excel link (local or in SharePoint) to an existing Power BI dataset in Power BI service? I've tried that change on a couple different reports and when I publish I don't get the replacement confirmation popup. Instead I get a second report published with the exact same name and a new reportId.

Thanks,

Jen

Dear jlh9,

I am facing the same issue. We did a re-design of an existing Power BI dataset and planned to replace the old dataset with the new one - both with direct query connection.

Our steps:

1. Re-design of the dataset

2. Download the report from the Power BI service

3. Change data source settings of the report to the new dataset

4. Upload the report under the same name to the same workspace

Unfortunately, the report shows up twice, each with an individual report ID.

Best regards

Bassi
