Get data using sharepoint

Hi Community,

Scenario: In my organisation, I need to pull an online excel file which is located in another user's account.  Need suggestion on how to go about this .

I tried getting the file using web as source but the credentials don't work . I believe because of the file not being located in my personal sharepoint.

Thanks @Ritaf1983 for your quick reply. I have the editing access to the file and all.  The link looks something like this. I didn't understand this part "Enter the URL of the SharePoint site (not the file itself) and navigate to the folder containing the Excel file" . Exactly which part of the URL should I enter the SiteURL .

Hi @powerbidev123

To pull an online Excel file located in another user's SharePoint account, you must have access permissions to the SharePoint folder or file where the Excel file resides. Without proper permissions, authentication will fail, which is likely why you're encountering issues with credentials.

Here's what you need to do:

  1. Request Access Permissions:

    • Ask the file owner to share the SharePoint folder or file with you via your organizational email.
  2. Use the SharePoint Folder Connector:

    • In Power BI Desktop, connect using the SharePoint Folder connector.
    • Enter the URL of the SharePoint site (not the file itself) and navigate to the folder containing the Excel file.
  3. Authenticate with Organizational Account:

    • When connecting, select Organizational Account and sign in with your work credentials.
  4. Update Credentials in Power BI Service:

    • After publishing the report to Power BI Service, go to Settings > Datasets > Data Source Credentials and ensure your credentials are set to the Organizational Account.
