If you know which columns or rows you will need to use in report, you can write SQL statement to import data to Power BI Desktop, this way, it will save you same time for handling data in Power BI Desktop and can reduce your data model, which will improve performance of your report in some extent.
However, if you are not sure which columns or rows you need, you can directly load all the metadata into Power BI Desktop without writing SQL query.
