Create Virtual Voice Assistant Experience in Power BI (Desktop, Service & Published Reports)

Hello Microsoft Fabric Team,

I would like to share a Tips & Tricks guide on how to enable a Virtual Voice Assistant experience in Power BI Desktop, Power BI Service, and ensure that the same experience is accessible to end-users and clients even after the report is published and shared.

Many professionals are now expecting interactive reports where they can ask questions like:

"What is the total sales of January 2020?"

and receive either a text or voice response directly from the report—just like a real Virtual Voice Assistant.

How this can be achieved:

🔹 Power BI Desktop & Service:

  • Use the Q&A Visual to allow users to type natural language questions and get instant answers from the data model.
  • Use Smart Narratives to provide automatic text explanations of insights based on the selected data.

🔹 Embed Virtual Voice Assistant:

  • Create a Power Virtual Agent (chatbot) and connect it to your data using Power Automate or Power BI APIs.
  • Use Azure Cognitive Services (Speech to Text & Text to Speech) to allow voice input and output.
  • Embed the chatbot directly into the Power BI report page using a Power Apps visual or iframe web content.

🔹 After Publishing:

  • When you publish the report to the Power BI Service and share it with clients, the Virtual Voice Assistant feature (via chatbot and voice features) remains active.
  • Clients accessing the report through the Power BI Service or an embedded environment (like a website or app) can also interact with the voice assistant, provided the necessary services are integrated and permissions are properly managed.

🎯 Key Benefits:

Fully interactive reports with natural language queries.
Voice input and voice response capabilities.
Same experience in Power BI Desktop, Service, and after publishing to clients.
Seamless integration across Microsoft tools like Azure, Power Virtual Agents, and Power Automate.

I believe this would make a strong Tips & Tricks feature to help the community build next-level interactive and voice-enabled Power BI reports that enhance user experience across all platforms.

Thank you for your attention and consideration!

Best regards,
