Connection Type

I am receiving some pushback from my IT department. Does anyone know the default connection type for "Connect to Sql Server"?
They are insistant on my use of and ODBC connection, yet the ODBC fails with using a Listener.

Thanks,

Keith

Besides @pqian's great information, these two links should be helpful as well:

  1. Pull Data from SQL Server with Power BI Designer: https://powerbi.microsoft.com/en-us/blog/pull-data-from-sql-server-with-power-bi-designer/

PowerQuery uses either SQLOLEDB or managed sql client. Depends on which one is installed. DirectQuery can only work over managed sql client.

If you have an ODBC driver for SQL, you can use a custom connection through "ODBC Query"
