Certificate Chain Not Trusted Error Effecting PowerBI Only

Hi Community,

I am receiving the following error message when trying to connect to SQL Server:

Message=A connection was successfully established with the server, but then an error occurred during the login process. (provider: SSL Provider, error: 0 - The certificate chain was issued by an authority that is not trusted.)

I only receive this error when connecting PowerBI, but not connecting through Sql Server Management Studio.

I need to connect to a Database (versus using Microsoft or Windows acct):

Thank you!

Christina

Thank you @Anonymous !

I ended up adding an ODBC Driver 17 for SQL Server Connector and accessing the data in Power BI through ODBC instead and it seems to work.

Thanks again!

Christina

Hi @Anonymous!   Thanks for the reply.

I am not able to access this server through SSMS using Windows Authentication.  I use SQL Server Authentication using a log in and password.  Does this alter any of the instructions given above?

Also, I did review this blog prior:

SSL Security Error with Data Source | Microsoft Power BI Blog | Microsoft Power BI

I'm unclear on what Trusted Root CA I would be looking for to verify I have it on my computer.  It mentions:  "What is missing here is the item that will cause us to trust the certificate that is being presented by SQL Server."

But do you know what the CA woud be called that I am looking for to verify if I have it or not?

Thanks so much,

Christina

HI,@christina4444

Thanks for your quick reply, I can feel your effort.

Here is my solution to your question:

1.First of all,if you want to log in using SQL Server Authentication, you can also try it, except that the first step is different, the other steps are the same. I'm not sure if your sql account can create a new login, but you can try it, it's the easiest way I've found so far.

2.In my research on your problem, I found a screenshot of an error similar to yours:

If you also encounter this problem, you can try clicking on the icon below

3.And, if you are not sure which CA is missing, you may need to contact your IT department or SQL Server's administrator for more help. What we can see now is limited.

If you need any further help, please don't hesitate to let me know. I will do my best to support you.

Leroy Lu

Hi,@christina4444

Regarding the issue you raised, my solution is as follows:

In my test, using Microsoft account verification, the following error screenshot appeared:

1.If you have created a credential authentication method for sql data sources, you can edit the permission in the following page in the desktop:

vlinyulumsft_1-1719297526641.png

vlinyulumsft_2-1719297536389.png

https://www.c-sharpcorner.com/article/edit-or-remove-permission-from-existing-data-source-connection...

2.First you need to open SQL server Configuration Management, open the project, and then restart the computer:

3.Log in to the database using window authentication:

4.Next, right-click on the server to open properties:

5.Select Security in the pop-up server tree menu, then select SQL server and windows Authentication Mode:

6.Log in to SQLserver as your domain user, change the password, and continue to restart the computer.

7.Then you can select "Database" in the SQLserver connection credentials, the following screenshot may appear, click "ok" can be.

8.The following relevant documentation hope to help you:
