Capacity - How to calculate/optimize

Hi all,

I hope all is well! Im a first time poster, so I hope my question makes sense!

My organization is committed to Power BI but we’re running into issues in regards to Capacity. We were wondering how its calculated and how best to optimize the platform to support.

I guess my questions are:

  • How is Capacity calculated in order to properly allocate our Capacity needs? Or in other words, what uses up Capacity and to what extent?
  • Is there a specific calculation to come up with it? Or do we test our datasets/sematic models to see what performance is like and how much capacity the report/sematic model is using up?
  • Additionally, are there any best practices to optimize Capacity use?

Thanks in advance!

Hi @kcdavi01

Thanks to @amitchandak for your timely and effective response. Here are my additions:

When you publish dashboards, reports, or semantic models to Power BI services, they consume capacity. You can manage the configuration capacity in the admin portal. For more details, you can read related document link: Configure and manage capacities in Power BI Premium - Power BI | Microsoft Learn

Capacity load assessment is also possible: Power BI Premium capacity load, overload, and autoscale - Power BI | Microsoft Learn
