During clean install I get the message
Could not write value PBIDesktop.exe to key \Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main\FeatureControl\FEATURE_GPU_RENDERING, ...
I have IE 11 installed on the machine, and
HKLM HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main\FeatureControl
exists and I can add a key to it using RegEdit.
Windows 8.1 Pro. Asus laptop iwt I7 cpu.
I then installed it on a Windows 7 machine with IE 7 and it seems OK. But on that machine no value with that key is written, to HKLM, ... but it was to HKCU, with value DWord 1.
Go back to Windows 8.1 machine and sure enough I cannot add a key to the HKCU FeatureControl. Can add a value but not a key. And can add a key to its parent Main. Security permisisons are OK.
Any ideas most welcome
Solved! Go to Solution.
OK, solution was to rename the FeatureControl key, then create another one, then recreate the keys that were in the original in the new. The old one is corrupted somehow in that magical structure known as the registry. (No, not a simple permissions problem.)

I had this issue but the issue was with activating bitlocker. Once activated it installed without this error.
System: Surface Book
