Cannot Create Measure : Cannot find table

Hi There,

I've just opened a power BI workbook but I can't seem to create any measures. Several functions in my tool bar are limited, would anyone know why? I am connected to a database but I'm only able to simply visualize data as it appears in the field pane on the right.

Any troubleshoots?

Thanks,

Casper

Hi @caspervg1,

Could you please a screenshot and describe more details about your scenario? We need to know that if you connect to SQL Server database via Direct Query mode or if you create a live connection to SSAS database in Power BI Desktop.

If you connect to SQL Server database via DirectQuery mode, some functions are not available , for example, Data View is not available in Desktop, we are not able to create new table. However, you can create measure by right-clicking the table and choosing “New Measure ” as shown in the following screenshot.

Also please note that in Power BI Desktop,  a set of DAX functions have been disabled by default on DirectQuery mode in order to avoid performance issues with these functions, we will need to enable “allow unrestricted measures via DirectQuery” option to use these functions.

For more details about using DirectQuery in Power BI Desktop, please review this article: https://powerbi.microsoft.com/en-us/documentation/powerbi-desktop-use-directquery/ .

If you create a live connection to SSAS database in Power BI Desktop, only Report view is available in Desktop. And we are not able to create measure, regarding to this issue, please vote it in this idea: https://ideas.powerbi.com/forums/265200-power-bi-ideas/suggestions/11685723-create-calculated-measur... .

Thanks,

Hi Lydia,

Quick question, you mentioned that "If you create a live connection to SSAS database in Power BI Desktop, only Report view is available in Desktop. And we are not able to create measure, regarding to this issue, please vote it in this idea: https://ideas.powerbi.com/forums/265200-power-bi-ideas/suggestions/11685723-create-calculated-measur... .", since that was some time ago, is it still the case? And f yes, is there any workaround?

Thank you in advance for your time!

Best regards,

Ioannis

Hi @Lydia Zhang,

I had the same question, from PowerBI desktop i have a live connection to a SSAS database, and only report view is available. The link which you posted for voting the idea is no longer available! Was wondering if it has already been implemented and i didnt have the right settings. Any help on this would be great 🙂

Hi Lydia,

I no longer have the particular workbook in front of me but I believe I was connected trough an SQL server. Both data view and create measure were disabled. It was very hard to believe that I couldn't create any custom measures.

I voted for the thread, I'll also try to allow these restrictions

Thanks,

Casper
