Can Data Gateway access SQL server on another server

I have a secure server (server1) where SQL server sits. I have another Server (server2) that has public internet access and ports open to SQL server on the secure server. server2 is where I intend to install the data gateway to access SQL Server on server2.

My question is how do I 'connect' the DG from server2 to server1? I heard this is doable as previously, I thought the DG only worked on the same server the data sits.

Any help would be great. Thanks

If both of your servers belong to the same domain, you don't need the gateway run on the same server with the SQL Server.. Install and login a gateway is simple and do not really take any effort, you can install gateway on both server and just login to switch the running gataway depends on your scenarios.

@Anonymous , Once you use install data gateway, Login to that. You should be able to see the gateway in the power bi service. under admin portal

Also if you publish a file from gateway server you should be able check under datasource setting

Hi @amitchandak

Thanks for your reply. So if I publish the data source (using PBI) from the same server the DG is installed, it shouldn't matter where the original data sits?

If I hit refresh from app.powerbi, will this in effect, pull the latest data from the secure server, via the server the DG is installed?
