Auto refresh and publish from PowerBI Desktop to web

I was using the PowerBI Service which was connected to my huge excel file stored on OneDrive where I was working on, when I was making a change it would update the dataset and the reports on the PowerBI Service.

It was working great all this time.

Recently, I am getting some strange error and it doesn't refresh. Since I created the report initially on the PowerBI Service I cannot download it. I cannot connect to the excel from my OneDrive anymore neither it seems on the Service.

I have to recreate the whole thing in PowerBI Desktop (correct me if I am wrong here..). That's tons of work.

However, I am trying to figure out the concept of the desktop app all together, because it works with manual publish button which seems to be a big downgrade for me.

So now whenever I make a change, I have to open PowerBI Desktop, click Refresh, wait, click publish, choose some obvious options like that I want to replace the report on the web (isn't that obvious?), then confirm it.. only then i will be able to see the result on the web and be able to see it on my mobile. This was possible without doing ANY action on PowerBI Service.

After Googling I have tried installing the GATEWAY ON PREMISES which just gives me an error with a huge log file.

Am I on the right path? Isn't the purpose of PowerBI to visualize my data and make it accessible on the web and my phone? If that's the case why isn't that automated? Most people do not use it on their mobiles then or they have to do PUBLISH after every update in their data? Is it an app for people from the past?

Please tell me I am wrong and there is a way I didn't figure out

Hi, @whocares61

I am glad to help you.

First, you must ensure that your OneDrive file has not been moved or renamed and that your Power BI Service has the correct permissions to access the file. If the file path is changed or the permissions are modified, the PowerBI service will not be able to refresh the dataset.

You can take advantage of Power BI Desktop's capabilities to create more complex and customised reports. While this may take some time, it is one way to ensure that the report is properly connected to the data source.

In Power BI Service, you can configure scheduled refreshes of your datasets so that you can automatically update your data without having to manually refresh and publish it.

If your data source is located locally, you need to install and configure a local data gateway. Ensure that you download and install the latest version of the gateway and follow the documentation to properly configure it to connect to the data source.
